Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, IA) — Tuesday, July 1, 2003

BERNARD, Iowa - Daniel J. "D.J." McMahon, 74, of 15152 Higginsport Road, Bernard, died at 9:35 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, with the Rev. Xavier Dieter and the Rev. Thomas Bisenius, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade.

Mr. McMahon worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co., retiring in 1989.

He was born on Dec. 7, 1928, in Bernard, son of Albert and Marie (Sullivan) McMahon. He married Mary Lou Carr on Oct. 9, 1954, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen.

He received his education in the Bernard rural country schools. He was a Korean War Army veteran, and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of St. Patrick's Parish, Garryowen., Dubuque County Saddle Club, the Andrew (Iowa) Saddle Club, Cascade American Legion Post 528, Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union, the Democratic Party, the Back Country Horsemen and Alcoholics Anonymous.

He was a man of many interests; he was a fisherman, a mule rider, a wood worker, an avid book reader and 100 percent Irish.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou McMahon, of Bernard; Iowa; nine children, Roseann (Steve) Rath, of Iowa City, Susan (Eric) Manternach, of Cascade, Joe (Theresa) McMahon, of Battle Ground, Wash., Bill (Mary Lou) McMahon, of Farley, Jim (Cindy) McMahon, of Williamsburg, Dan (Colette) McMahon, of Cordova, Ill., Dave McMahon, of Dubuque, Larry (Colleen) McMahon, of Cedar Rapids, and Lorrie (Mark) Meiers, of Cascade; his mother, Marie McMahon, of Cascade; 18 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Arlene Fuller, of Dubuque, and Sister Monica McMahon, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his father, Albert McMahon; and a brother, Bob McMahon.
