Dubuque Daily Times, Wednesday, April 26, 1876, Dubuque, Iowa, Page: 3

D. C. Mathews, who had been Marshal of Sabula for a month, was detected by J. G. Leonard in stealing lumber from the yard of the company for which he (Leonard) is agent. Leonard charged Matthews with the crime; Matthews confessed, and to settle the matter privately gave a mortgage on his place for $200 to pay for the lumber stolen-the value of which was not over $40 or $50. Then Leonard let the matter leak out, and now stands in about an unenviable light in that community as poor Matthews, having taken advantage of the others dishonesty to extort money from him. Matthews resigned the Marshalship, and the courts may yet deal with the matter. We condense form the Sabula Gazette.

In this artice the surname "Matthews" is spelled Mathews and Matthews.
