Dubuque Daily Times Friday, July 12, 1872, Dubuque, Iowa Page: 9

Rev. Thomas Calahan, formerly of Clinton, in this state, was lynched, tied to a tree and given seventy–five lashes on his bare back, in Reynold Co. Mo., on the night of the 22nd of June, because he would not reveal the name of a man who fired the Court House – when the leader of the lynchers, who was the incendiary, stood with a drawn pistol ready to blow ready to blow his brains off if he uttered his name. After his release, Mr. C. fled to St. Louis, where he now is. He has filed information against the incendiary. Mr. Calahan was formerly well-known in Scott Co.
