There was a shooting affray in Preston last Tuesday night in which a former Maquoketa woman, a Mrs. Hayes, the woman who ran the laundry on South Main Street, took as prominent part. It seems a number of Preston’s would be’s were disturbing Mrs. Hayes in some manner and she shot at them through a window with a revolver, the bullet taking effect in the hip of a young man by the name of Chris Farley. The local surgeon was unable to locate the bullet and took the wounded man to Chicago where the X-ray might be used. There have been no arrests made to hush the matter up. – Maquoketa Excelsior.
