J. J. Dunn moved to Prairie Creek in 1856, and attended school in the old Bernard school. Records show this school was built in the mid 1850’s. He moved to Dubuque in 1866 where he learned the blacksmith trade at Tom Connolly’s. In 1876 he operated a grocery store. He was elected Clerk of the District Court of Dubuque in 1880-82-84-86 and 88. In 1889, he was appointed State Inspector of Oils for Iowa. He was elected Sheriff of Dubuque County in 1903.
