Funeral services for Lester C. Larsen, 70, 744 Clinton Avenue, Marengo, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25 at the Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. He died Friday afternoon, March 22, 1991, at the Veterans Medical Center, Iowa City, where he had been hospitalized three days. He had been ill a year.

The Rev. Ralph Farmer, First Church United, West Liberty, officiated at the service. Mrs. Dorothy Mays was organist.

Burial, with military honors, took place at Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. Pallbearers were Dennis Wachs, Bill Wachs and Scott Peters, all West Liberty; Warren Clark, Muscatine, all nephews; Alan Schumacher and Mike Doty, both Marengo.

Lester C. Larsen was born July 15, 1920, at Iowa city, the son of Carl J. and Nettie Sorensen Larsen. He was raised in West Liberty where attended school.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the European theater over three years and had received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Wandling-Wendel Post 76 American Legion, Marengo.

He married Leona Wachs Jan. 24, 1946, at Muscatine. They made their home at Brooklyn and West Liberty before moving to Marengo in 1969. He had worked for the Rock Island Railroad 43 years and was a track supervisor in the Marengo area before retiring in 1980, the day before the railroad ceased operating.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Jeff Larsen, Hendersonville, Tenn.; three daughters, Carolyn Logan, Mitchellville; Deborah Eckert, Wilton; Lori Brecht, Middle Amana; one brother, Harold Larsen, West Liberty, and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Randall, April 1, 1990.
