Funeral service for Robert V. Dentel, 88, Des Moines, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Plymouth Church, Des Moines, with visitation following the service. He died Oct. 1, 2017.

Private burial will be held at Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter.

Robert Vern Dentel was born Jan. 5, 1929, in Ackley, the son of Emma Johnson Dentel and Carl O. Dentel. He graduated from Ackley High School and the University of Iowa. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served four years, the last at a reconnaissance base in Lakenheath, England.

He married Verlyn (Lynn) Weber in 1956 and was employed as an underwriter for Employer’s Mutual Insurance and later as a stock broker with Conway Brothers, Des Moines. He began his banking career with First Bank of Grantsburg, Wisconsin, followed by Bank of Elroy, Wisconsin.

In 1965, he moved his family to Victor, where he purchased controlling interest in Victor State Bank. In 1984, they formed Dentel Bancorporation. He was chairman of the board of all six banks involved. He enjoyed his customers and was proud to help them succeed in their personal and business endeavors. In 2014 he was recognized by the Iowa Bankers Association for 50 years in Iowa banking.

He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, U of I Alumni Association, National Rifle Association and co-chair of Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign in Iowa County.

He enjoyed skiing, four-wheeling, snowmobiling, reading and hiking, especially the Grand Canyon and Isle Royale National Parks.

Dentel is survived by his sister, Georgia Jean Dentel, Grinnell; his wife, Verlyn (Lynn) Dentel; their children, Robert (Patricia) Dentel, Victor; Mary (Stephen) Howell, Ames, and Kathryn (Henry) Anderson, West Des Moines; grandchildren, Abbey (Dustin) Deppe, Jonathan and Katie Dentel, James, John and Sarah Howell and Molly, Sophie and Libby Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Thomas Jeffrey Dentel.
