Celebration of life gathering for Donald Kahler, 83, Marengo, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 29, at the Marengo American Legion Hall. He died Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Brooklyn Community Estate, Brooklyn.

Donald Wayne “Zeke” Kahler was born Oct. 30, 1934, in Oxford, the son of Lou and Stella (DeGood) Kahler. He was a 1953 graduate of Marengo High School, and served in the U.S. Army for six years.

He married Mary Pat Beilstein on July 12, 1958, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg. They were blessed with two children, Timothy Joseph and Patricia Marie. He worked for Me Too Foods in Williamsburg and later transferred to the Marion, Iowa, store. He then began working at Armstrong Department Store as manager of the alterations department, retiring from there. He relocated to San Diego, Calif., where he managed the women’s alterations department at Neiman Marcus until retiring in 2000.

He enjoyed playing softball and golf, working on his cars, and cheering on his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes, and the San Diego Chargers. He especially looked forward to spending time with his family and taking his granddaughters to Disneyland, Sea World and the San Diego Zoo.

Don is survived by his children, Tim Kahler, Los Angeles, Calif., and Patty Meade, Williamsburg; three granddaughters, Laura Cortese (Vic), Philadelphia, Penn.; Sara Meade (Gabe Decker), Williamsburg, and Emily Parmenter (Carsten), Chicago, Ill., and three great-grandsons, Landon, Grant and Luke.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Volz and Mildred Koenig, and five brothers Everett, Floyd, Ivan and Howard, and Leo in infancy.
