Funeral services for Leonard J. Smith, 78, Ladora were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 12, at Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. Smith died Thursday, April 9, 1992, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, following a long illness.

The Rev. Nathan Rastl, St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Victor officiated at the service. Organist was Connie Huedepohl, Williamsburg. Vocalists William and Rita McDonald, North English; Sandra Ficken, Williamsburg, and August C. Steffen, Iowa City, sang "In the Garden." Congregational hymns were "Be Still My Soul" and "I'm But a Stranger Here."

Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Victor. Casket bearers were all nephews, Loren Neubauer, Fairfax; Allyn Neubauer, Amana; Willard Meyer and Lanny Wilcox, both Deep River, and Bill Fetzer and Monte Meyer, both Williamsurg.

Honorary casket bearers were Ernest Kleinmeyer, Walter Reinhart and Mike Bott, all Williamsburg; Stephen Healy, Armona, Calif.; Phil Bott, Victor, and Harold Koehn, North English.

Leonard John Smith was born Aug. 26, 1913, in Lincoln Township, Iowa Cunty, the son of Joseph and Alma Schultz Smith. He attended the area shool and grauated from Millersburg High School.

He married Esther Charlotte Meyer Dec. 25, 1937, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Lincoln Township, south of Victor. The couple lived on a farm near Ladora where he farmed as long as his health allowed

Smith is survived by his wife; one son Garvin, Mitchellville; one daughter, Sherlyn (Mrs. Dean) Doehrmann, Williamsburg; three grandchildren, David Drown, Cedar Rapids; Darcy Blythe, Orange City, and Lisa Smith, Chicago, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, Erica and Alicia Drown and Paige and Nolan Blythe, and two sisters, Edna Neubauer, Amana, and Alice Boyden, Armona.

He was preceded in death by his mother, who died when he was 4; his father, May 1973, and his stepmother, Edna Cummins Smith, Augut 1991.
