Matthaeus Ehler
(October 22, 1835 – June 27, 1906)

Matthaeus Ehler was born Oct. 22, 1835 in Bohendorf-Fehmarn Island Germany. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He married Caroline Ehler on July 26, 1860 at Petersdorf. Caroline was born Sept 3 1842 at Danschendorf. She died Nov 2 1874 at Bojecdorf. Buried at Petersdorf, Fehmarn Island. Matthaeus and his 4 sons farmed on the island before coming the the United States. In 1886 the 3 older sons Julius, Ludwig, and John immigrated to the U.S. settling in the Schleswig territory in the German settlers area. Mattheaus and his younger son Richard came in 1893 leaving a daughter Mathilda who had lost her mother following childbirth. Mattheaus spent the remaining years of his life living in the U.S. helping and living with his sons in Grant Township, Ida County. He passed away June 27, 1906. He is buried in Grant Township Lutheran Cemetary, Ida County.
