Doris was born July 6th, 1933 on her parent’s farm northwest of Cresco. She was the daughter of Bernard Clement Ollendieck and Irma Mary Fritz. Doris attended Cresco Public School and then her senior year switched to Assumption High School. She enjoyed playing basketball and she was crowned basketball Queen. After high school she was a waitress at Elms Café. On October 8th, 1952, she was united in marriage to Ronald Francis Ferrie at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco. Together, Doris and Ronald made their home on the farm near Schley, Iowa. They lived on a few farms before settling on the home place of Ronald’s parents, and they lived there for many years. They both loved farming, and Ronald was the fourth generation Ferrie to have owned it. Ronald died on December 30th, 1998 and Doris lived on the farm for another year before she moved to town. Doris loved to dance to her polka music, no matter where she was. She always said her greatest accomplishment in life was her children. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild very much and talked about them all the time. Farming with her John Deere, chatting with the neighbors, and playing cards with her friends were also some of Doris’s favorite things to do.

Doris kept busy while living in town- Church Council, volunteered at the hospital, Howard Co. Residential, VFW, Legion Auxiliary, Hospice, Historical Society Member, Cresco Chamber Member, School Board, Past President Altar Rosary Society, counted money at Church, and Meals on Wheels. For several years, she worked at Notre Dame Grade School Lunch Program.

Her favorite saying was “That’s just the way it is”
