FORMERLY of ELMA - Gary Hyberger, age 80, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and formerly of Elma, Iowa went to heaven, surrounded by his loving family, on Oct. 20, 2022, after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
A visitation will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Monday, Oct. 24 from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer vigil from 5-5:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Tuesday, Oct. 25 from 9:30 a.m. until Mass time at 10:30 a.m., with Father Jon Seda officiating. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Gary Dean Hyberger was born on March 22, 1942, to Harlan and Margaret Hyberger in the small northeastern Iowa town of Elma.
Gary was a man of strong faith and loved his family. He met the love of his life, Lavon Sir, in March 1962 at the Elma Memorial Hall, where he boldly “cut in” and asked her to dance. They went on their first date on March 10, in a snowstorm, and from that moment on he would come to the farm to hang out with Lavon and her family. They married on June 8, 1963, in Lourdes, Iowa, and moved to Cedar Rapids where they raised their four children. Before Alzheimer’s took its firm hold on his mind, he would end each evening telling his wife “goodnight gorgeous” and “I love you.” Gary raised his children with faith, discipline and love and taught them respect and the value of a day’s hard work.
Gary loved spending time with his grandchildren, and if you heard giggling among the kids, you knew Grandpa was nearby. He never missed a birthday and would call his children and grandchildren to sing Happy Birthday. We will certainly miss this.
Gary worked at Link-Belt Speeder (FMC) for 23 years. He then worked at Rockwell Goss for 14 years.
He knew no strangers. He would start a conversation with everyone he crossed paths with and would leave them with a cheerful impression. He was a practical joker with an infectious laugh and would often captivate his family and friends with his story telling.
Gary was a giving soul and loved to lend a hand to the neighbors – often mowing their lawns or snow blowing their driveways (whether they needed it or not). He loved to fish and hunt and was personally responsible for reducing the pheasant population in Iowa.
Gary is survived by his wife, Lavon; two sons, Kevin (Tacy) Hyberger and Jeff (Pam) Hyberger; two daughters, Lana (Mark) Poole and Dawn (Howie) Krousie; his 11 grandchildren, Alex (Corey), Presley (Charlie), Mallory (Behdad), Ashley (Abel), Derek, Kyle (Gillian), Logan, Jared (Julia), Courtney (Dane), Camille (Addison) and Cade; his sister, Jan; sister-in-law, Pat; two nephews, Jim and Tom; and two great-grandchildren, Calvin and Harvey.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Condolences for the family may be left at www.cedarmemorial.com under obituaries.
