Mabel was born on August 27, 1923, in Howard County, Iowa, daughter of John and Mary (Markovetz) Vrba. She attended rural country school until grade eight and then graduated. Mabel met Edward Berka and on October 9, 1945, they were united in marriage by Rev. Alphonse Biskup, O.S.B. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. The couple was blessed with two daughters Marie and Norma. Mabel and Ed raised their daughters on the Berka family century farm near Protivin.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Catholic Workman, and Senior Citizens Club in Protivin. In her spare time, Mabel enjoyed playing cards and bingo, and doing word search books. She liked watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and her favorite bird, cardinals. Mabel looked forward to the occasional trip to the casino. She was known for her kolaches and raisin cream pie. Although she had many joys in life, her favorite was spending time with her family. She always looked forward to visits and phone calls.

Mabel is survived by her daughters Marie (Robert) Moudry of Decorah, IA, and Norma (Ron) Bullerman of Calmar, IA; grandchildren Lavon (Scott) Vickery of Hampton, VA, Adam (Kim) Bullerman of Urbandale, IA, and Amy (Jamie) Hammersland of Elkader, IA; great grandsons Blake Bullerman, Owen and Griffen Hammersland; and nieces and nephews.

Heaven gained an angel; we are so blessed to have had Mom all these years. We love her and will miss her, but we know that she is at peace.
