Wilma Caroline Daley, age 85, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away peacefully September 11, 2021, at Regional Health Services of Howard County. She was surrounded by the family she cared for over the past 65 years.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco on September 16, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Hindt-Hudek Funeral home in Cresco on Wednesday, September 15, from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by a prayer service. Visitation will continue at the Notre Dame Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. prior to the Funeral Mass.

Wilma was born on March 6, 1936, to George and Opal (Dunneman) Peter, in Cresco, Iowa. She was the second of four children. She was baptized and confirmed into the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Wilma attended grade and high school in Cresco, graduating in 1954. During her teen years, she helped care for her younger siblings while her mother worked various jobs. Wilma then worked at The Cresco Café. After graduating high school, she worked for a time at St. Marys in Rochester, Minnesota, before becoming engaged. Wilma married William Leland Daley on February 7, 1955, at The Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. Prior to that wedding, Wilma converted to the Catholic Faith, to which she adhered the rest of her life.

Wilma made her life with Bill on a farm near Cresco, and dedicated her life to making a home for her new husband and the family she loved. Four children were born into this union: Michael Daley of Cresco, Jeanne (Tom) Andersen of Osceola, Iowa, David (Pamela) Daley of Cresco, and Colleen (Keith) Brown of Cedar Rapids. Included in her cherished family today are 12 grandchildren: Johann Daley, Amran Daley, Norrita (Mike) Moorman, children of Michael; Lori Throndson, Eric (Carey) Roeder, Brian (Katie) Roeder, and Rachael Roeder, children of Jeanne; Jennifer Daley-Oakes, Matthew (Erin) Daley, and Brett Daley, children of David; Emily (Ross) Lanser, and Aran Brown, children of Colleen. Additionally, there are 24 great-grandchildren.

Made necessary by a growing family, and the economic reality of her early married life, Wilma became an avid gardener. Her large and beautiful vegetable gardens were enhanced by a variety of colorful flowers. Her cellar was always well stocked with all varieties of canned vegetables, sauces, fruits and preserves. She became a creative and diligent cook, and her dishes and desserts were always praised by her family, and by other relatives who feasted at the many family reunions she helped to organize. Her dedication to family extended to her two sisters, brother, and many cousins with whom she kept close ties to, and she made every effort to keep her clan united through the years by constant expressions of love and by personal visits when possible. Family-near and far-was most important to her.

Another important part of her life was her involvement in her Church. In addition to faithful attendance at Mass, she was active in Ladies’ Groups, especially the committees which were involved in cooking and baking. She made hundreds of pies and cakes for fundraisers, and for decades was involved in organizing funeral luncheons. Wilma’s other interests included playing canasta and 500, country music of all decades, listening to Elvis, going for long walks with Bill, dancing, crossword puzzles, reading, old movie classics, and being entertained by her many pets through the years. After her family was grown, and Bill retired from farming, Wilma and Bill traveled across the U.S., and across the seas. They also traveled closer to home with the CUSB VIP travel club.

Wilma is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bill, and all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving sisters, Dolores Courtney, and Janice Mecklenburg.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, George and Opal Peter, and her brother, Keith Peter.
