Adrian Bernard Schatz, 94, of Cresco, IA , passed away June 2, 2021, at Regional Health Services of Howard County. Visitation will be held June 7th,2021, from 4 to 7 pm at Notre Dame Church, Cresco with a Scripture Service at 4 pm. Funeral Services will be held June 8th, 2021, at 11 am at Notre Dame Church with visitation ,one hour prior to the service.

Adrian was born December 31, 1926, to Albert and Walburga Schatz in Cresco. He was the second youngest of five children. He attended St. Joseph Grade School. After his eighth grade graduation, he worked at home on the family farm while his brothers served in World War II.

Growing up on farms about one mile apart, Adrian found his bride Elizabeth (Betty) Shea and they married at St. Joseph Church on August 22, 1951. After marriage, they moved to an adjoining farm and lived there until 1997 before moving to Cresco. They were married 69 years and brought eight children to this union.

Even after “retiring”, Adrian went to the farm on a daily basis to “assist” Alan and John, to maintain large gardens and to be the caretaker of the Howard Center Township Cemetery. He had a heart attack while working on the garden. He was quite proud that he was able to mow the cemetery and have it ready for Memorial Day Weekend this year.

He was proud of being a lifetime parishioner of Notre Dame Parish and appreciated visiting with parishioners and Fr. Jacob Rouse. Fr. Jacob demonstrated a deep knowledge of Adrian as he anointed him at his death. He told Adrian, “This anointing will not cost you anything” and this gave him peace. We thank Fr. Rouse and Notre Dame Parish for all they did for him.

He enjoyed being with family and relatives, especially when it included a game of cards. One of the first questions he would ask, “Do you have time for a game?” After losing his license to drive, Julie became his favorite child for a day when she took him to the casino. Walking into a casino gave him childlike joy.

Survivors include his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Schatz, three sons, five daughters: John Schatz(Joanne White) of Cresco, IA, Alan (Wendy) Schatz of Cresco, IA, Theresa Puffer of Plymouth, MN, Carol (Dean) Dusheck of Plymouth, MN , Diane (Kim) Wohlsdorf of Rochester, MN, Susan (Greg) Hurlebaus of Rochester, MN, Julie (Joseph) Haskovec of Lime Springs, IA and Fr. David Schatz of Dubuque, IA.; 20 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and one on the way. His only living sibling is Leoba Dotzler of Tuscon, AZ.

He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Wilfred, Raphael, and Joseph Schatz and daughter-in-law Dianne Schatz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials or gifts in his memory can be given to Notre Dame Parish.
