OBITUARY.
HAYES.
Lovina Elizabeth Malone was born May 10, 1843 in the state of Illinois, and departed this life at her home in Cresco Sept. 20, 1916. While yet a babe she removed to Dane Co., Wis., and from here, at the age of seven years, she came with the family of an uncle, with whom she made her home after losing both her parents, to Howard Co. Iowa. This uncle, George Harlow, was one of the pioneer settlers of New Oregon Twp., settling upon the farm which was the Hayes family home for years, and which is now occupied by the son, Jesse Hayes. This place was the home of the family, with the exception of about three years spent in California, until their removal to their present home in Cresco, about twenty years ago.
On March 18, 1863, she was united in marriage to Jacob D. Hayes, who preceeded her to the better home a little over three weeks ago. Of the six children born to this union, one died in infancy; the others, Mrs. Cora Mason and Mrs. Nora Bell of Ord, Neb., Addie and Jess Hayes, of Cresco, and Mrs. Margaret Friend of Bonair, who with one sister, Mrs. L. E. Garrett of California, are left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother and sister.
Mrs. Haves united with the Methodist faith at New Oregan{sp} several years ago, and has since been a consistent member of that church, living her relig{i}on in her daily life, her example ever being an influence for the good to her associates, a truly Christian character.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows her name spelled Lavina and that she is buried in New Oregon Cemetery.
