A GOLD STAR MOTHER DIES

Mrs. Emma Johnson Shapley, 65, a gold star mother, died yesterday at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Louise Coon at Cresco, where she had been making her
temporary home during her illness of diabetes.

She lived in and around Floyd for many years and since becoming a widow she
has visited around with her six children at various places. The American
Legion Post at Floyd was named afer her son, Emil E. Johnson, who died in
France during the world war.

She is survived by six children: Mrs. Anna Henderson of Charles City, Mrs.
Blanche White Spelious of Des Moines, Mrs. Bernice Vannurdan of Jordan, Minn,
Clifford Johnson of Waterloo, Elmer Johnson of St. Cloud, Minn., and Mrs.
Louise Coon of Cresco, also one brother and eight sisters.

Charles Hauser brought the body to Charles City yesterday afternoon. Funeral
services will be held Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home with the Rev. G. A.
Hess officiating and internment will be made on the Alfred Johnson lot in
Oakwood cemetery in Floyd.

Born in Peoria, IL to Ole and Anna Pierce (Pehrsdotter) Nelson. Parents first
settled in Bradford Twp., Chickasaw Co and then Osage, Mitchell Co., IA. Emma
married 11 Apr 1888 to Alfred Johnson in Charles City. They farmed in Floyd
area. Alfred Died 22 Jul 1914. She married Charles Shapley 31 Mar 1917 in
Charles City. He died 18 Apr 1924.
