Lester Gaylord Ellingson, 90, passed into the arms of the Lord on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, Iowa.
Lester was born on November 22, 1929, to John and Geneva (Haugen) Ellingson on the family farm in Howard County, IA. He graduated high school and went on to marry his sweetheart, Darlene Duneman in 1950 at the Justice of the Peace; to this union were born four sons: Rodney, Dale, Steve, and Randy. Lester and Darlene cherished each other until Darlene’s death in 1995.
You might have known him for his hands, rough and callused from working the land. A balance of taking, but doing no harm, this is the way he ran his farm. You may have known him through his wife, the most loving woman who shared his life. Working together through sorrow and joys, they paid for a farm and raised four boys.
You might have known him through his gun, lots of game and lots of fun. Ducks or pheasants, rabbits or deer, back in the fifties, or just last year.
You may have known him through his boat, those wilderness lakes or a river float. Spilled bait in the bottom, and snus on the seat, it smelled pretty fishy, but the memories are sweet.
So many others which way should I go, do I start with the gardening, end with Mexico? No, I’ll leave it to you, which memory to hold, the man of his youth or when he was old.
Hey, the Guy wasn’t perfect, we all can attest, as a memory maker though? Maybe the BEST.
Lester is survived by his four sons and their wives Rodney (Doreen) Ellingson of Cresco, IA, Randy (Laura) Ellingson, of Cresco, IA, Dale (Renee) Ellingson, of New Ulm, MN, and Steve (Jane) Ellingson of Cresco, IA; his grandchildren Jess (Nichole) Ellingson, Ross (Emily) Ellingson, Beth (Kory) Huber, Jami Wenninger (Les), Cory (Laurie) Ellingson, Sara (Ron) Riehle, Reid (Natalie) Ellingson and Owen Ellingson; his great-grandchildren Rhiannon, Danielle, Olive and Lucy Ellingson, Iver, Adyson and Audra Ellingson, Grady and Gavin Huber, Emerson and Carly Wenninger, Kennady and Avery Riehle, Eleanor and Esmae Ellingson.
Lester is preceded in death by his wife, Darlene, grandson Nathan Ellingson, and his brother Charles Ellingson.
Visitation will be on Friday, September 4, 2020, at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Private family services will be at a later date. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks are recommended and social distancing will be practiced.
