Obituary of Gregory Marshall.
A letter from Mrs. Gregory Marshall conveys the sad news of the death of her husband at their home near San Jose, California, on Friday, July 19th, as the result of injuries sustained in a fall several months ago, by which he sustained a fractured hip.
Mr. Marshall was for years a resident of Cresco, and was always counted one of its most highly respected citizens, and he with his family were for years among the most active members of Grace Episcopal church.
Mrs. Marshall and daughter have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of Howard county friends in their deep grief. The following obituary we reprint from one of the San Jose dailies:
The funeral of the late Gregory Marshall, who passed away at his home here last Friday, was held yesterday afternoon at 1 o’clock.
A large number of friends were present, and there were many handsome floral pieces. The Rev. Halsey Werlein Jr., conducted the service at the service at the family residence in Willow street. Clarence Urmy, choirmaster at Trinity church, sang three hymns, “Rock of Ages,” “Abide With Me.” and “Lead Kindly Light,” also playing at the end of the service the “Dead March in Saul.” The interment was at Oak Hill.
Gregory Marshall was born in New Brunswick June 9, 1832, the second son of the late General Marshall, K. E., of Lipson Terrace, Plymouth, Eng. He came to Iowa in 1868 to join his three brothers and to engage in farming, hoping to benefit his health. On the first of February, 1861, he was united in marriage with Fanny Kent Duff, youngest daughter of the late John Rutherford Duff, Esq., of London, Eng., the marriage taking place in Trinity church, New York City. In 1901 finding it necessary to seek a more salubrious climate he left Iowa bearing with him the love and esteem of the community, and settled in San Joes.sic} He died in the communion of the holy Catholic church, being a most devout member of Trinity parish.
He is survived by his dearly beloved wife and daughter, Leila, who have the sympathy of their many friends.
