CHAPEL.
Edwin R. Chapel was born in North Bolivar, N. Y., July 23, 1841, and departed this life at the home of his daughter in Cresco June 27, 1910.
He was united in marriage to Mary E. Brown August 20, 1865. Seven children blessed this home, six girls and one boy, five children and a loving wife having preceded him to the better land. The surviving children are Mrs. E. W. Johnson of Elk River, Minn., and Mrs. F. E. White of Cresco, with whom he had made his home since the death of his wife three years ago.
On Sept. 2, 1861, he answered his country’s call, enlisting in Co. I, 9th Regiment of Iowa Volunteers, and served during the entire war. Mr. Chapel enjoyed the association of his fellow soldiers of the late war and was identified with the Memorial Post of Cresco.
He had been a resident of Howard county for many years and was among one of the first settlers in Cresco.
About three months ago Mr. Chapel’s health began to fail, and the last six weeks his health began to fail more rapidly and he passed away in the full hope of a painless future. His daughter Mrs. Johnson was with him the last six weeks to cheer and comfort him, and all that loving hands could do was done to lessen his suffering.
Several years ago he was converted and joined the M. E. church of which he was a member until his death.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Wednesday afternoon at 10 a. m., conducted by Rev. Gammons. Memorial Post G. A. R. conducted services at the cemetery according to the beautiful and impressive ritual of the Grand Army of the Republic, and he was laid to rest in Oaklawn beside his beloved wife
