Mrs. Ed. F. Rourk Called to Rest.
Mrs Edward F. Rourk died at 10:40 o’clock, Saturday morning, Dec. 5th, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mee. She had been in poor health for a number of months. The cause of the death was valvular leakage of the heart.
Mary Loretta McNally was born in Lawler Iowa, Aug. 31, 1877. When only a small girl she removed to Lime Springs, Iowa, with her parents, and later came to Sterling to live. She was married to Mr. Rourk in this city May 22, 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Ronrke{sic} resided in this city about one year after their marriage and then removed to Dubuque. Iowa.
After living in Dubuque for a time Mrs. Rourke’s health began to fail and physicians advised that it would be necessary for her to go south. Following this advice Mr. and Mrs. Rourk went to Amarillo, Texas. Her health was benefited for a while, but later began to fail again and about two months ago Mrs. Rourke was taken to Chicago, where she took treatment in a hospital. Ten days ago she came to Sterling and remained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Mee until the time of her death. Everything known to medical science was done but the life could not be saved.
Mrs. Rourk was a devout Catholic and was an ardent worker for her church. At Amarillo, Texas, she was president of the altar society, and it was largely through her efforts that the first Catholic church on the plains of Texas was built.
She graduated a few years ago from St. Mary’s Academy of Prairie du Chein, Wis, and took the honors in both art and music. Her life was devoted to her home and her church and her presence made happiness whereever she was.
The funeral was held Sunday morning at 11 o’clock, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Mee. The services were conducted by Rev. Father J. J. Bennett, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic church, of this city. Hymns were sung by the choir of the church. A large number of relatives and friends were in attendance.
The remains accompanied by the bereaved husband, Mr. and Mrs. John Mee, William Rourk and three brothers of the deceased, Lucas, Victor and Charles McNally went on the 1:17 train Monday morning for Cresco, Ia. The following people of Clinton, Ia. met the funeral party and went to Cresco to attend the services: Mrs. Ryan, Mrs. P. Collins, Mrs. M. J. Williams and Miss Mary Taylor.
The remains were interred in St. Joseph’s cemetery, Cresco, Ia., beside the graves of Mr. and Mrs. McNally, parents of Mrs. Rourk.—Sterling (Ill). Gazette.
