Chas. R Hills was born December 20, 1814, in Allegheny county, N. Y., moved to St. Joseph, Michigan, in 1837, in which year he married Miss Sarah Backus, of Batavia, N. Y. In 1852, Mr. H. made a trip to California by the overland route. He returned to Michigan in 1855 and came to Fillmore county, Minn., the same spring. His wife died in 1878. There were born to them eight children, two of them dying in infancy, were buried in Michigan, Emogene died in Harmony twp., in 1862, and Jane, (Mrs. Hosford) who died at Florenceville, Ia., January 31, 1899. Those now living Homer, Montrose, S. D., Harriet, (Mrs. Arneson) Benclare, S. D., Webster, who resides on the old homestead, and Washington, Granger, Minn.
He died at his home near Harmony, Minn., March 24, 1899, and was buried in the State Line Cemetery, the funeral being from the State Line M. E. church. Rev. Brown officiating.
