Iowa Plain Dealer May 4, 1897, LP, C5

Herbert Fremont, eldest child of Edgar G, and Jessie B. Daskam, was born in Winneshiek Co., Iowa, Nov. 3, 1884, and died in Elgin, III., April 25, 1897, aged 12 years 6 months and 22 days. For nine years the child has been a quiet and patient sufferer from double curvature of the spine. About a week preceding his death, he contracted measles complicated with congestion of the lungs, and after hours of intense suffering his spirit was released at sunset Sunday evening. While the body was weak and frail, the intellect was unusually bright and when told he could not live, turned to his weeping mother and with clear voice and smiling face said, "Mamma, don’t cry for me, I do not like to leave you but am not afraid to die, my Saviour wants me and I’m going to a better land than this, where I want to meet you and papa.” Herbert moved to Elgin Ill., three years ago with his parents and had intended to leave there for Cresco, April 21, to spend the summer with his grandmother, Mrs. John Daskam. So great was his yearning for his old Iowa home that when he felt he was going to die he asked his father to bury him in Iowa. Owing to the serious illness of other members of the family his parents could not leave home, consequently E. R. Johnson, of Chicago, an uncle of the child, accompanied the remains to Cresco where funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, April 27, conducted by Rev. F. P. Shaffer. The body was laid to rest in Oak Lawn.
To the neighbors and friends and M. E. choir, who so kindly assisted us in the services and burial of our beloved son and grandson, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks.
