Louis H. J. Wenthold, 73, of Cresco, IA passed away on Monday May 9, 2011 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, IA.

Louie was born on May 23, 1937 in Cresco, Iowa to Louis B and Lydia (Rutsch) Wenthold. He was baptized and confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1955. During school, he enjoyed wrestling, and was a member of the National Honor Society.

On September 2, 1961, Louie married Betty Ollendieck at St. Bridget's Church in Bluffton, Iowa. To this union six children were born. Together they lived in Cresco until 1968, when they moved to the farm northwest of Cresco. Then in 1997, they moved to a house in Cresco that they built together.

Louie started working for the Milwaukee Railroad when he was 17 years old. He began as a lineman and traveled from Chicago to South Dakota. He later became foreman and covered the area between Conover, IA, and Austin, MN. He retired in 1992 after 38 years of service. After moving to the farm he continued working on the railroad, and began crop farming, milking cows, and raising livestock including sheep, pigs, beef cattle, and rabbits.

Louis always enjoyed telling stories and making everyone laugh with a good joke. He had an amazing ability to memorize and recite bible verses, poems, and historic writings. Some of his favorite pieces were the Gettysburg Address, In Flanders Fields, and The Lord Is My Shepard. You could often hear him singing "Amazing Grace", or another one of his favorites.

He was a proud grandpa and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Betty of Cresco, IA, six children, Gene (Dixie) Wenthold of Dyersville, IA, Martha (Jeff) Byrnes of New Albin, IA, Cindy (Russell Ferrie) Krause of Lourdes, IA, Lori (Randy) Kerian of Cresco, IA, Kathy (Tim) Rice of Cresco, IA, and Louie R. Wenthold of Cresco, IA, 12 grandchildren, Sara (Matt) Forrester, Sheila & Staci Wenthold, Brittany & James Byrnes, Justin & Cody Kerian, Devon, Chloe, & Ethan Rice, Tanner Tucke, and Isaac Wenthold, and two great grandchildren, Jordan Byrnes and Chezlee Drain.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cemetery:
Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco, IA.

Visitation:
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday evening, and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Service:
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, IA.
