Carrol Allen Watson, 76, of Saratoga, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, of stomach cancer, at his home in the woods.
Carrol was born on February 9, 1934, at the family farm in Howard County, the son of Frank and Bernice Jones Watson. Carrol lived his entire life in the vicinity of his birthplace. He attended country school and graduated from Riceville High School. On September 7, 1953, Carrol married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Gray, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester, Iowa. Together they raised five children on the Watson family farm, where Carrol had a dairy operation and raised hogs. The Watson farm became a century farm in 2001. In 1982 Carrol and Evelyn moved to their present home. For the past 28 years they have cherished their life in the woods north of Saratoga, sharing their unique earth home and its surroundings with family and many visitors over the years, including school children. Carrol especially enjoyed following the daily activities of the abundant wildlife that passed by their windows each day. A highlight of Carrol's year happened each fall when his sons and grandsons gathered to hunt deer on their property. Carrol also enjoyed the many hours he spent cutting firewood.
Carrol's love of working with wood was evident during the years he spent as a carpenter and cabinet maker with John Koshmeder. In later years he was eager to repair, refinish and cane antique furniture. Carrol was happiest when his hands were busy.

Carrol's last place of employment was with Mehmert's Tiling in Saratoga. He always looked forward to the tiling season each spring and fall. Carrol was an avid wrestling fan. He also enjoyed visits from his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Carrol is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn; 3 sons, Michael (Sheree) of Charles City, Timothy, and Thomas (Teresa) of Saratoga; 2 daughters, Laurie of Winona, Minnesota and Jennifer (Paul) Brausey of Spencer, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, Cory, Nicholas, David, Crystal, Joni, Madeline, Brandon, Joshua and Levi; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Elaine Jacobson of Cresco and Shirley Sizer of Waterloo; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
