JOHN GOLDSMITH

On Saturday afternoon at 4:00 April 11, 1914, occurred the death of John Goldsmith at his home in Wayland Iowa. He was ill but a very few days. John Goldsmith was born in Ontario, Canada, September 28, 1824. At the age of seven years he came with his parents to Butler County, Ohio and at seventeen years of age joined with the Amish Mennonite Church of which his father was pastor and was a faithful member of same until his death.

He came to Lee County, Iowa, in 1846 and in 1852, September 1, he was united to Miss Mary Lander of Butler County, Ohio who departed this life May 9, 1870. On March 1, 1874, John Goldsmith was married to Miss Barbara Schlamaker of Butler County, Ohio.To them four children were born. In 1876, he moved his family to Henry County, Iowa where he resided until his death.

John Goldsmith was 89 years, 6 months, and 13 days of age and the oldest of a family of twelve children of whom three brothers and two sisters survive him. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 at the residence and at 2:00 at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. Interment was made at Finley Chapel Cemetery.

To mourn his loss are: his widow and six children. Two by his first marriage and four by his second marriage, besides these three brothers and two sisters, all of whom were present excepting a daughter of Texas who was too ill to attend. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. S. M. Muselman of the Wayland Mennonite Church, Rev. Daniel Graber, and Rev. Simon Gingerich of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, and Rev. Jacob Yoder of the Mennonite Church of Kalona, Washington County, Iowa.

Among those present from abroad were John Ruup, Henry Walyesper, Barmos, John, Henry and Mrs. John Katteleiter, Miss B. L. Shmette, John King, all of West Point, Lee County, Iowa.
