Lyle J. Zehr, 79, a retired mortician of rural Wayland, died Tuesday afternoon, April 10, 1984, at his residence. He had been in failing health. Services will be Friday at 10 A.M> at the United Methodist Church in Wayland with the Rev. Richard Dunn officiating. Burial will be in North Hill Cemetery near Wayland. Visitation begins tonight at Jons Funeral Home and a memorial has been established for the Wayland United Methodist Church.

Mr. Zehr was born January 2, 1905 to George and Fanny Wittrig Zehr. He was a 1923 graduate of Wayland High School, attended Iowa State University and was graduated from Hohenschah Carpenter Mortuary School in St. Louis. He was married to Vivian Allen, June 1, 1932 in Wayland.

He taught school at Hillsboro and Kalona and owned and operated the Zehr Funeral Home in Wayland for 34 years, retiring 14 years ago. He was a member of Wayland United Methodist Church, Lions Club, Adoniram 120 Af and AM Masonic Lodge in Wayland.

Survivors include his widow, a daughter, Maribelle Cash of Wayland, two foster sons, William Alston of El Toro, California and Robert Alston of Stratford, Connecticut; five grandchildren and a sisters, Mrs. Eli Salzman of Rock Island. Preceding him in death was a sister.
