SUCCUMED[sic] TO DREAD DIPTHERIA
LEO CAUGHLIN[sic] PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT.
Little Lad Had Been Sick But a Few Days--All Medical Aid of No Avail--Funeral Was Held This Afternoon.
------------------------------------
Last night at the home in the south part of the city, occurred the death of a little lad, Leo Coughlin.
The terrible suddenness of it has left the stricken family and wide circle of friends dumb with grief. The little fellow was in bed only since Sunday. His case was diagnosed as diphtheria Monday and the home quarantined. All day Monday and Tuesday he grew rapidly worse in spite of all the combined aid of a number of physicians and a trained nurse from the Mercy hospital in Burlington. Nothing seemed to have the power of relieving or staying for a single instant onrush of the dreaded disease. Monday morning antitoxine was administered, but to no avail. All hop for the lad was give up last evening by the physicians and during the night the relieving angel touched the little sufferer and summoned him home.
Leo was 14 years old last Valentine's day, and was one of the brightest little fellows in the city, according to the reports of his teachers. He was ever during his short happy life as polite and manly a boy as is not often found. He leaves a father and mother, seven sisters and four brothers, including his twin brother, Louis.
The funeral service will be held from the home this afternoon at 3:#3 o'clock and will be private.
