JOHN B. MARTIN

Mt. Pleasant--John B. Martin, 84, of 706 S. Walnut, former Wayland mayor and Henry County supervisor, died at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at the Henry County Health Center.

He was born Sept. 14, 1899, at Garner to Oscar and Mary Christner (sic). He married Ruby Aldrich on June 29, 1950 at Iowa City.

He served as Wayland mayor for six years and from 1972 to 1976 was on the Henry County Board of Supervisors. He was a bulk agent for Sinclair Oil for 40 years.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Congregational Universalist Church, the Wayland Masonic Lodge, was a 50-year member of the Wayland American Legion, having served in the navy during World War I.

Surviving: Wife; daughter, Mrs. Anna Mae Ware, Clemson, S.C.; son, John Fred Martin, Denver, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Virgina Haines, Winfield, and Mrs. Betty Brown, Findlay, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ainee Bilsland, Archer, and Mrs. Esther Meredith, Norway.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Friday, Congregational Universalist Church, the Rev. Charles Tweed: Forrest Home cemetery with full military rites. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Beatty Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant. A memorial has been established.

Note: His mother's maiden name was Mary Hesser. Mary's mother died when Mary was very young and she was raised in the C.C. Christner home.
