OBITUARY OF CAPT. DEVOL

Capt. C.F. Devol, an old and respected citizen of Mt. Pleasant, was buried from the Congregational church Sunday afternoon, Feb. 25th. The church was full of neighbors and friends to show their regards for a good man. The choir sang "Asleep in Jesus," and "Jesus Lover of My Soul," very sweetly. Remarks were made by Rev. O.W. Rogers, on the last part of the 7 chapter of Revelation, and he was laid to rest in the Old Cemetery.

Capt. Devol was born in Athens Co., Ohio, Nov. 18, 1816, and received his education at Marietta college. He came to Iowa and settled at New London, in 1851. After a six year's residence at New London, he was elected sheriff and removed to Mt. Pleasant, where he lived the remainder of his life, and where he died. He held the office of sheriff for four years, and then became the Overseer of the Poor. He was a prominent member of the Congregational church of this city for more than thirty years, and, during a large part of that time, held the office of church clerk. Capt. Devol was twice married. In 1855 he was united in wedlock with Miss Eva Bentley. Three children were born to them, two of whom still live. After nine years of wedded life, Mrs. Devol died. In 1865, he married Mrs. Isabella Gregory, one child was born to them, but died at ten years of age. Capt. Devol was a man of good education, and filled several places of trust with credit.
