UNCLE DAN TAYLOR DIES FROM CANCER

PASSES AWAY AT HOME NEAR WINONA SCHOOL SATURDAY.

Was Well Known About City, Coming Here From Mississippi Many years Ago - Last Years Were Unhappy.

Late Saturday afternoon occurred the death of another of Mt. Pleasant's best known and most respected old negroes, "Uncle Dan" Taylor, at his home, a little cottage just west of Winona school house. His death was due to cancer and a general decline on account of his age. He and his wife, who has been an invalid for a number of years, have suffered many privations in recent years, the little hut in which they lived serving them but poorly, being sadly inadequate as a home, and these privations have told upon the old man.

Uncle Dan, as he was familiarly called, came to Mt. Pleasant, after the war of the Rebellion from the state of Mississippi, where he and his wife had been slaves. Both were happy and cheerful, and withal willing to work. They lived fairly comfortable until Mrs. Taylor became an invalid, and finally Uncle Dan became so enfeebled as not to be able to provide for them. They have been receiving assistance from their children, four of whom live in this city, and from the kindnesses of neighbors and friends. However, the reversal from the happy, care-free life so characteristic of "Uncle Dan" twenty years ago, to an almost poverty-stricken way of living, caused the last years of his life to be filled with constant worry and he has experienced much unhappiness through the closing days of his life.

The funeral services were held this afternoon at two o'clock from the house, conducted by Rev. Eve, pastor of the Colored Baptist church of this city and interment was at the Old City cemetery.
