OBITUARY: HELEN TODD BATES

M. Helen Bates, 89, formerly of the Trenton community, died at 6:15 A.M.Friday, August 8, 1997, at the Parkview Home of Wayland. She was born September 27, 1907 at Morning Sun, the daughter of Thomas and Martha Elizabeth Mehaffey Todd. On August 14, 1930, she married Bernard K. Bates at Morning Sun. He survives.

She graduated from Morning Sun High School and in 1925, graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She was a member of the Finley United Methodist Church. She held many offices and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the Chapter J of Tri T of Wayland. She was a school teacher in the Mediapolis and Trenton areas until her marriage. She moved to Wayland in 1987, moving to Parkview Nursing Home in March of 1991.

She was named Iowa Homemaker of the Year in 1955. She was also active with the hospital auxiliary. She was a 4-H leader for many years and an active member of the Farm Bureau. She was also active in United Methodist Women for many years.

Survivors include her husband, of Wayland, one daughter, Martha Ann Bright of Moravia, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, James T., a grandson, her parents, four brothers, Calvin, John, Milford, and Albert Todd, three sisters, Retta Belknap, Marie Dial, and Esther McElhinney.

The family will receive friends for a luncheon after the services at the church. There will be no visitation at the Beatty Funeral Home of Wayland. Memorials have been established to the Parkview Home of Wayland or to the Finley Cemetery Association.
