OBITUARY OF BERNARD KAUFFMAN BATES: Mt. Pleasant News (Iowa) 8/24/99

Bernard Kauffman Bates, 94, formerly of the Trenton area, died Sunday, August 22, 1999 at the Parkview Home in Wayland, Iowa. The funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. at the Finley United Methodist Church north of Trenton with Carl Klein and the Rev. Don Coffin officiating.Burial will be in Finley Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The family invites friends and relatives for fellowship after the service at the church. Beatty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Finley Church Cemetery Association or the Parkview Home.
Mr. Bates was born April 1, 1905, the son of James William and Magdalena Kauffman Bates. He married Helen Todd on August 14, 1930 in Morning Sun.He attended school in the Trenton and Mt. Pleasant areas. He was a farmer in the Trenton area for many years, then moved to Wayland in 1987 and in 1991 moved to Parkview Home. He was a member of Finley United Methodist Church, past member of the Odd Fellows, an active member of the Henry County Fair Board for many years, and was active in the Henry County 4-H program.

Survivors include one daughter, Martha Ann Bates Bright of Moravia, seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister, Ruth M. Bates, one son, James Todd, and one grandson.
