OBITUARY: Ed Kauffma

Edward Kauffman, well known Wayland resident, passed to his reward on Thursday evening, December 8, 1955 at 7:15 P.M. He was a patient at the DeVol Nursing home in Mt. Pleasant during the past four months of his lingering illness and it was here his Maker released him from this life's toil.

Mr. Kauffman had been in frail health for many years but was able to display courage in the face of his difficulties by bearing them without complaints. He had lived here in the family home in Wayland for the past nine years. Before that, he and his family had made their home on farms in the Wayland community over the span of his lifetime. In earlier years he did some barbering in Washington.

As a farmer, he loved good livestock. Nothing cheered his heart as did the sight of well groomed, well bred farm animals. His own interest was highlighted in his love of fine horses.

He was born August 6, 1881 in Washington County, near the town of Wayland, the son of Chris and Elizabeth Miller Kauffman. Early in his life he joined the Wayland Mennonite Church upon confession of faith and baptism. He remained a member of this brotherhood until his passing. He was united in marriage with Stella Roth on January 16, 1910 by the late Rev. S. M. Musselman. The home was blessed with two sons, Rex Edward and James C. Rex preceded his father when but a child of one year.

Those who survive include his widow of the home; one son, James C. , his wife and two granddaughters, Peggy Ann and LuAnne of Lockridge, two sisters, Mrs. William (Emma) Allen and Mrs. Katie Johnson both of Wayland; and two brothers, William and Homer both of Wayland. All these and many other friends and relatives will remember Mr. Kauffman with loving reference. His presence among us has drawn us closer together in sharing each other's joys and burdens.

Those who preceded Mr. Kauffman were his father and mother, the son, Rex Edward, two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Bates and Mrs. Anna Goldsmith, and two brothers, John A. and Chris Kauffman.

Funeral services for Mr. Kauffman were conducted at the Wayland Mennonite Church, Saturday, December 19, 1955 at 2:00 P.M., Rev. L. A. Habeger officiating. A quartet of men, Roger and C. C. Wyse, Duwaine Hirschy, and Dale Richenberger, sang. Mrs. Edward Wittrig presided at the organ. His final resting place was in North Hill cemetery with the following casketbearers assisting: Allen Clark, Ralph Roth, Gilford Roth, Ronald Roth, Ralph Kauffman, Harold Kauffman. Zehr funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
