Thursday; July 3, 1930 - The Wayland News

Mrs. Stacy Carper, living eight miles north of Mt. Pleasant, took her life early Thursday by hanging herself to the rafter in the garage. Her lifeless body was found by her husband only a few minutes after the tragedy had been enacted and she had been dead only a few minutes it is believed.

Mrs. Carper had been in frail health for some time and had at various times made remarks which led the family to believe that she would end her life if the opportunity was ever given her. On two occasions she had attempted a similar act but had been watched so closely by her family that her plans where thwarted.

This morning, Mr. And Mrs. Carper were home alone and as Mr. Carper had to be gone a few minutes from the house, he had taken precautions to make it impossible for Mrs. Carper to get out of the room. However, with her mind intent upon enacting the tragedy she was prepared to escape the instant her family was out of the house.

Mr. Carper was gone only a few minutes while he attended to some chores at the barn. When he came to the house about 8:30, Mrs. Carper was gone and with the horror before him that tragedy had befallen her, Mr. Carper searched the house first and then went to the garage where he found her. She had fastened a rope to the rafter of the garage and had stepped from the running board of a truck in the identical manner that less than a week ago a relative, Lewis Bates, had taken his life.

OBITUARY:

Hundreds of friends and neighbors gathered at the Methodist church in Trenton at two o'clock on Saturday afternoon for the funeral of Mrs. Stacy S. Carper who died at her home on the previous Thursday. Many beautiful floral tributes, many kind words, and many falling tears told the esteem in which she was held and the sorrow her untimely death caused in the neighborhood, and the sympathy for her stricken loved ones.

Pastor Frank E. Weston conducted the services and preached the sermon from Rev. 22:21 "The grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all". Miss Nina Miller was accompanist for Miss Marjorie Huston and Mr. John Huston who sang very helpfully "Going Down The Valley", "In the Garden", and "The Sweet Bye and Bye". Messrs. James, Harry, and Lawrence Wilson, Henry Burkey, Ed Baust, and Ed Cummings carried the sleeping form to its resting place in Green Mound Cemetery.
