Helen L. Canby, 85, of Mount Pleasant, died at 11:35 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Park Place long term care unit in Mount Pleasant. Born July 15, 1919 in Geneseo, Ill., she was the daughter of Rudolph Ferdinand and Grace Gertrude Ward Pobanz. On Sept. 2, 1938, she married Charles William Canby at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Canby worked at IRC in Burlington and Seifert's Clothing Store in Mount Pleasant.
She graduated from Pleasant Lawn High School in 1936. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the former Prairie Gem Methodist Church in rural Mount Pleasant. She was a past worthy matron and 50–plus–year member of the Bethlehem Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 38 of Mount Pleasant. She was a member of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, the past president of Founders Chapter A of TTT and was active in National Federation of Republican Women and served as chair of the local committee.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Ronald of Ballwin, Mo.; one daughter, Patricia Canby of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; one sister, Betty Barrett of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren and four great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. An Order of the Eastern Star service will follow visitation.

The funeral for Mrs. Canby will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery, rural Winfield.

A memorial has been established to TTT Scholarship fund in Mount Pleasant.
