John Kurtz was born in Maryland October 28, 1829 and died in Monmouth, Illinois June 17, 1905. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1838 and with them settled near Wayland, in Henry county, in 1842. In 1853 he was married to Miss Mason. They lived near Wayland until 1896 when Mrs. Kurtz passed into the Heavenlie. Since then, Mr. Kurtz has lived with different members of his family, passing in and out among them a gentle and much loved father and grandfather. He leaves four sons and two daughters, all well established in their own homes.

On May 31, while at his son’s home in Monmouth, Illinois, Father Kurtz fell and was injured in his hip. This injury proved more serious than was at first expected and complications developed which proved fatal.

The funeral service was held in Wayland M.E. Church, conducted by the pastor, C. R. Zimmerman, June 19, 1905 at 2:00 P.M. Interment followed in the Wayland Cemetery under the direction of the Masonic fraternity, conducted by Brother A. Holliday of Monmouth Illinois.
