Shirley A. Porter Dunbar, 68 of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at the Henry County Health Center.

Visitation will begin after noon on Thursday, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m., at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jeff Crawford officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Shirley Dunbar Memorial.

Born March 30, 1936, in Rock Island, IL, Shirley was the daughter of Clarence Raymond and Helen Leona Brown Jacobs. She grew up in Rock Island and graduated from Rock Island Senior High School in 1955. She married Thad Porter in 1959. They later divorced. On April 18, 1970, she married Fred Dunbar in Branson, MO.

Shirley was a homemaker. Early in her life, she was a car hop at the A&W in Rock Island and worked at the Maid-Rite Diner in Moline. She owned and operated Dunbar Ceramics for 25 years in West Chester, IA. In 1995, she moved to Mt. Pleasant.

Shirley was artistic in many ways. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, working in her garden, and always canned the food she reaped from her harvest. Shirley liked country music and enjoyed playing Bingo and Yahtzee. She collected Depression glass.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra (Terrell) Coon of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Vicky (Luis) Guillen of Harlingen, TX; three sons, Mark Porter of West Liberty, IA, Steven (Tamara) Porter of Ainsworth, IA, and Gary Dunbar of Egan, MN; thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are seven sisters, Dorothy (George) Kall of Rock Island, IL, Marion Romine of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Virginia Jensen of Moline, IL, Betty Davis of Moline, IL, Jane Overton of Bettendorf, IA, Molly (Lindy) Cummins of Des Moines, IA, and Linda (Stanley) Smith of Rock Island, IL. She also had a special friend, Bill McClure of Mt. Pleasant, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Douglas Porter, a granddaughter Hannah Guillen, and by two brothers, Kenneth and Daniel Jacobs.
