James P. Merklin, 90, of Iowa Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls. Funeral services are pending with the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel.

James [Jim] Merklin, 90, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2008, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls. Funeral services for Jim Merklin will be 10:30 am Thursday, December 4th at the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls, with Pastor T. J. Norman officiating. Burial will follow at the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. A time of visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday, December 3rd at Linn's Funeral Home Iowa Falls. Memorials may be directed to the North Iowa Hospice, one 2nd avenue N.W., Hampton, Iowa 50441.

James Pershing Merklin was born July 25, 1918, at Sheldon, Iowa, the son of Helena [White] and Edward Merklin. He attended the Worthington, Minnesota Community Schools. During the hard times of the depression Jim was lovingly raised by Agnes and Lyle Mitchell of Spirit Lake, Iowa.. On March 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to Margret (Susie) Anderienne Hanson at Worthington, Minnesota. After her death he was united in marriage to Gladys Sanders on August 15, 1987, at Iowa Falls, Iowa. Jim was a blacksmith who owned and operated the Merklin Blacksmith and Welding Shop in Iowa Falls, Iowa for many years before retiring in 1982. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Iowa Falls, where he had served as an Elder and Trustee for many years. He was also a member of the Iowa Blacksmith and Welders Association.

Jim Merklin is survived by his wife: Gladys Merklin of Iowa Falls, Iowa; his two sons: Thomas Merklin of Iowa Falls, Iowa and Daniel [Darlene] Merklin of Iowa Falls, Iowa; two grandchildren: Todd [Tammy] Merklin of Iowa Falls, Shanlee [Bob] Speeter of Minnetonka, Minnesota; five great grandchildren: Ainslee Merklin of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Tayla Sunde of Mapleton, Minnesota, Tegan Sunde of Mapleton, Minnesota, Meicyn Zierke of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Kysten Zierke of Minnetonka, Minnesota; his special sister: Joyce [Roger] Overocker of Spirit Lake, Iowa; one brother: Joseph Merklin of St. Peter, Minnesota; one sister: Betty [Joe] Hermaling of Fulda, Minnesota; three step-children: Arthur [Karolyn] Sanders of Hartford, Wisconsin, Shirley [Gene] Harms of Baraboo, Wisconsin, Peggy [Ike] Rooks of Eldora, Iowa; seven step-grandchildren; and thirteen step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Helena and Edward Merklin; his first wife: Susie Merklin; a granddaughter: Paige Sunde; one sister: Margaret Merklin; and one brother: Edward Merklin, Jr.
