Berend Eilers Dead--Berend Eilers, an old time resident of Steamboat Rock, passed away after a prolonged illness on March 30 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Geo. Bruns, near George, Iowa. The remains were brought here for burial, which took place Friday afternoon, from the home of his son, Ben Eilers. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church. The deceased was born at Voellnerfehn, Ostfriesland, Germany, June 9, 1826, thus reaching the unusual age of 88 years, 9 months and 21 days. Having experienced in his heart the regenerating grace of God, Mr. Eilers joined the Baptist church in 1854. In 1859 he was united in marriage with Miss Frederike Willembrock, who preceded him in death about 24 years ago. Of nine children, seven are living, six sons and one daughter. Besides his children, he leaves twenty-seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In 1865 the Eilers family came to this country. Utica, N.Y., was their first place of residence. From there they moved to Steamboat Rock. In 1897 Mr. Eilers with his only daughter went to George, Iowa, where he has since made his home. Those who came to attend the funeral were Geo. Bruns, wife and son, Rev. C. Swyter of George, Iowa; L. D. Eilers, wife and two daughters, F. W. Eilers, J. B. Eilers and son, Ray, of Ft. Dodge, Ben Eilers and wife of Cherokee, Tom Eilers, wife and son of Storm Lake and W. A. Sentman of Union.
