The Passing of a Pioneer

Phillip Ell was born February 21, 1850 on a farm near Marysville, Union County, Ohio, the fifth of a family of nine children born to his parents, Sebastian Ell and wife Katherine (nee) Weidman.

He came to Hancock county in 1870, which was the year his father, Sebastian Ell, arrived in Ell township with five covered wagons, 21 persons, 11 head of horses and 14 head of cattle. This community was quite new at that time. It was the year that the town of Garner was platted, and Ell township was named for this family because there were so many of them.

At the age of 25, in the spring of 1875, Philip Ell and Wilhelmina Neiuriter were married at Garner, Iowa, where they commenced housekeeping.

Philip Ell was a teamster during all of his active life. He constructed roads for the county and helped with his team to build the B. C. R. & N. railroad grade through this county.

The family moved to Klemme in 1898 and after 15 years, to Midland Heights, Mason City. Here Mr. and Mrs. Philip Ell lived with their son, Leslie Ell. Mrs. Ell died in 1923 and for the last 16 years Mr. Ell has continued to live with his children.

Mr. Ell was a strong, healthy man and attained the age of 89 years, 5 months and 27 days. He was up and around until three days prior to his passing; the physical machine had gradually worn out.

Of the five sons born to them, four survive him. They are: Chas. P. Ell, Rudd, Iowa;, Ed G. Ell, Mankato, Minn.; Herman Ell, Cannon, New York; Leslie Ell, Mason City, Iowa.

He also leaves 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; 1 sister, Mrs. Geo. Kluckhohn, Klemme, Iowa; 1 brother, George Ell, Belmond, Iowa. - Klemme Times.
