SORENSON, Iliah I. (1917-2003)

Iliah Ione (Maddick) Sorenson was born on April 24, 1917, at Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of James "Jack" and Hazel (Kale) Maddick. She was raised and educated in Kanawha, Iowa. Following her schooling, as a young woman, Iliah worked at the Birch Biscuit Company in Des Moines.

On October 11, 1936, Iliah was united in marriage with Fred Loeffler, Jr. To this union two sons were born, Ronald and James "Jackie" Loeffler. The couple farmed in rural Kanawha for some time before farming near Belmond. Iliah and Fred owned and operated Freddie's Cafe in Kanawha, and Iliah also worked at Kessler Drug and at Fred Gordon's greenhouse, both in Belmond.

After the death of her husband, Fred in 1952, Iliah wed Lewis Sorenson in 1954. They farmed near Belmond. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Pamela Sorenson Weiss. Iliah and Pam moved back to Kanawha where Iliah clerked in many stores, and in later years, worked as a live-in companion for the elderly in Kanawha and many other surrounding communities. Her hobbies were bowling and flower gardening, and she cherished the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Weiss and her husband, James of Kanawha, IA; 10 grandchildren, Lynnette, Shannon, Rhonda, Arron, Wayne, Teri, Kent, Jennifer, Jessica, and Justin; many great-grandchildren; a sister, Vera Abbas and her husband, Clarence of Kanawha, IA; four brothers-in-law, Herbert Wicks of California, Karl Loeffler and his wife, Phyllis of Florida, Paul Rogalla of Belmond, IA, and Don Thompson and his wife, Mary of Belmond, IA; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Zeiger of Belmond, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred on October 18, 1952; two sons, Ronald on May 23, 1996, and Jackie on March 3, 1957; a sister, Vivian Wicks; infant twin sisters, Arlene and Darlene; a daughter-in-law, Marge; and a step-grandaughter, Dawn.
