Madalene J. Smith, 82, Blairsburg, died Saturday, May 11, 2002 at Hamilton Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at Foster Funeral Home, with Mr. Merlin Silverthorne officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fosters. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Madalene Jenett Smith was born December 31, 1919, daughter of Jep N. and Myrtle A. (Jones) Smith in Claremont, Minnesota. She received her education in rural schools in Minnesota and Iowa and attended Kamrar High School.

She married Ray A. McCoy on November 5, 1938 and they lived in Webster City, Mason City, Rockford, Illinois, LaPort, Texas, moving back to Fort Dodge in 1947, where Mr. McCoy died on January 30, 1965. On April 15, 1967, she married Dean F. Gadbury of Fort Dodge. They divorced in 1970.

She worked at Hamilton County Courthouse in microfilming county records for four years before moving to Hampton in Franklin County, where she also microfilmed county records. She served as Franklin County deputy recorder for six years before retiring December 14, 1984.

She moved to the country west of Blairsburg upon retiring and lived there at the time of her death.

She is survived by a sister, Eva Lavender, brother, Kenneth W. Smith and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers James M. and Eldon G. Smith, and sister Billie Swenson.

She was one of Jehovah's witnesses and attended the Kingdom Hall in Webster City.
