Geo. W. Coleman, Oldest Resident Dies

Observed 100th Birthday Here Last April 7th

Longtime Resident of County Had Been in Frail Health

George W. Coleman, Webster City's and Hamilton county's oldest resident who observed his 100th birthday April 7, died at his home here this morning at 9:30.

Mr. Coleman, in frail health, had been bedfast for the past year, but had maintained a keen interest in everyday activities, his mind and faculties being very alert for a man of his years.

The widely known former stock breeder and farmer had made his home in Webster City the past 34 years. He was always interested in the advancement of agriculture and stock breeding.

Funeral services are pending with McCauley-Chapman funeral home in charge. Time of the services will be announced soon.

George Coleman was born April 7, 1850 in Dover Point, New Hampshire, to Joseph Woodman Coleman and Mary Frances Goodrich Coleman. When he was eight years old, he came west with his parents and the family settled in Illinois.

Twenty three years later Mr. Coleman moved to Missouri, where he resided for five years before moving back to Illinois.

In 1886, the Coleman family moved to Iowa, locating on a farm eight miles northeast of Webster City and near Blairsburg. In addition to his regular farming interests, Mr. Coleman became interested in cattle breeding and specialized in thoroughbred and Red Polled cattle for several years. He won innumerable ribbons and prizes for his outstanding livestock.

Thirty four years ago, Mr. Coleman moved into Webster City, locating at 943 First street, his home ever since.

Mr. Coleman is survived by the following children: Mrs. C.M. (Addie) Steuer of Detroit, Mrs. F.G. (Effie) Wehrle of Crowden, Ill., N.H. Coleman of Webster City, Mrs. Frank (Lulu) Tatham of LaCrosse, Wis., Mrs. Lola Knight of Cleveland, A.C. Coleman of Chicago, Mrs. Harold Wilkinson of Los Angeles, Mrs. Mamie Sohn of Webster City, and a son by a former marriage, B.F. Coleman, now living in Muncie, Ind. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. A.H. Graffunder, formerly of Blairsburg now living in Williams and 21 grandchildren.

He was formerly a member of the Odd Fellows lodge.
