Vern Hetland, 80, of Webster City, died Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Unity Point Health-Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at Foster Funeral and Cremation Center with Pastor Mark Eichler officiating. Burial will be at Rose Grove Cemetery in Williams. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Vernon Leone Hetland, the son of Silas and Beatrice Hoffman Hetland was born on November 1, 1936 in Blairsburg. He graduated from Blairsburg High School in 1954. Vern served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. On July 19, 1969 he married Sandra Ann Riley in Shakopee, Minnesota. He was a foreman at Franklins for over 40 years. Vern always said the men hated it when the women started working there because they had to wear shirts and not swear. After retiring at age 60 he worked for Clausen farms.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy of Webster City; children, Scott Sweazey of Spirit Lake, Shelia Nuehring of Spirit Lake, Dawn Hetland of Waukee; grandchildren, Jessica, Nicol, April, Dannielle, Cory, Sawyer, Valerie, Dillon and Aaron; 18 great-grandchildren; and nieces, Charyl, Janine, Lynette, Michelle and Kelly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Jeff Hetland, Stewart Sweazey; brothers; Daryl, Boyd and Ardian Hetland; a brother-in-infancy and a sister-in-infancy.
Vern and Sandy enjoyed wintering in Las Vegas for the last 21 years. He could be found at happy hour in Kamrar and hobnobbing with the farmers. He loved to barbecue, watch the Hawkeyes, and fish. No matter what he did, Vern was always having fun.
