After graduation, he met the love of his life, Jean Marie Scharfenkamp. They were married for 56 years and had three wonderful children, Mark Joseph Berger (deceased), Keith William Berger of Des Moines and Kent Allen Berger of Appleton, WI. Joseph then enlisted in the Army and was in the military from October of 1961 to August of 1962. After an honorable discharge, he worked for Railway Express Agency (REA) for 20 years. After this, Joe started the job he is best known for working as a beloved mail-carrier in the town of Webster City, Iowa. He was employed by the Webster City Post Office for over 30 years.

Joe is survived by his wife, Jean of Bondurant IA; two sons, Keith, Kent and his wife Janet; sister, Helen Henn of Nebraska, and his three grandchildren Kennedy, Carson and Kylie, which were his pride and joy; and many extended family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Mark Berger, daughter in infancy, Lisa Marie Berger and seven siblings.
He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, the American Legion Post 191 and was a 4th degree knight in the Knights of Columbus.

Some of his various interests included; volunteering his time for community projects, playing cards with friends and family and meeting his buddies for breakfast/coffee.

We will truly miss Dad/Grandpa who was extremely hard working, caring, good hearted and quick-witted. We will remember his mischievous smirk and baby soft hands. Mostly, we miss the most wonderful father and grandpa that any child/grandchild could have. We will miss you Dad/Grandpa and we know you are looking down on us now. WE LOVE!!!!
