Mishap ends long fight for life by Todd Dyvad

A tumble from his own motorcycle while out riding in the east section of the city last evening, helped bring to an end a long battle against cancer for Todd Dyvad, 21, of Webster City, who died early this morning at Mercy hospital in Mason City.

Dyvad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dyvad, reportedly was riding his cycle in the fairgrounds area when he fell off while rounding a corner. He picked the cycle up, but later reported having trouble breathing and was admitted to Hamilton County hospital around 6:30 p.m.

It was discovered that the fall from the cycle had jarred loose the cap on a device that had been inserted in his chest while hospitalized in Texas, and his condition steadily worsened.

A Life Flight helicopter was called from Des Moines and it was decided to take the youth to the Hennepin hospital in Minneapolis where a pressurized machine would be available for emergency treatment. The helicopter left on its mercy flight at about 10:30 p.m. but his condition became critical and the aircraft landed at Mason City where he was rushed to Mercy hospital. The youth died shortly after midnight.

Todd Dyvad returned to his home here Sunday, March 8 after being a patient at the M.D. Anderson hospital in Houston since Jan. 2. He had been in total isolation there for about 55 days, receiving treatment through new techniques. His condition had improved to the point where he was released with plans for further checkups every 8 to 10 months.

Funeral services for Todd Dyvad, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church with the Rev. Joseph Sullivan officiating and with burial in Calvary cemetery.

A scripture-wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Foster Funeral home.

Michael Todd Dyvad, son of Donald and Roma Lea Caudle Dyvad, was born Feb. 29, 1960 in Webster City.

He was reared and educated in Webster City, being graduated from high school with the class of 1978.

He had been attending Iowa Central Community college in Webster City.

He is survived by his parents; one brother, Scott; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Caudle, Webster City.

He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church.
