Fred B. Downard, 76, died at 2:25 p.m. yesterday at his home, 203 Bank street. He had been in failing health the past three years, but more seriously ill since Sunday when he suffered a stroke.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Foster funeral home with the Rev. J.J. Share officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.

Fred Bert Downard, the son of Albert and Amanda Jane Downard, was born April 25, 1877 at Marengo. He was educated in the Marengo schools and later attended a watchmaking school in Elgin, Ill. He returned to Marengo and entered business with his father.

He later moved to Monona, Iowa where he operated a jewelry business.

He was united in marriage July 3, 1915 to Josephine Broihier. In the fall of 1915 the couple moved to Webster City where Mr. Downard purchased a jewelry store. He was in the jewelry business here until 1945, when he retired, selling the business to Carl Haynes.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter, Art Downard of Webster City; Ralph of St. Louis, Mo. and Mrs. J.C. (Charlotte) Phillips of Enid, Okla. Six grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

He was a member of the Elks club, of which he was a past exalted ruler. He was widely known through his business in Webster City and through his friendly affiliation in social activities.
