Tractor Tips, Blairsburg Man Crushed to Death

Percy J. Halsne, 38, Becomes County's Second Highway Victim

Percy J. Halsne, 38, rural Blairsburg farmer, was killed about 7:10 last evening when the tractor he was driving overturned in a ditch near his farm home.

Halsne's death was the second highway fatality in Hamilton county this year and it happened within one-half mile of the place where John J. Luppes, 52, also of Blairsburg, was killed on February 11 when his car rammed into a ditch at the end of a dead-end road.

Halsne had been helping at the farm of Clarence Larson, his brother-in-law, and had started home when the mishap occurred. His death was attributed to a brain concussion apparently caused when he struck his head on the ditch embankment as the tractor turned over into the deep ditch.

Halsne had just turned onto the county road from the lane leading to his brother-in-law's farm when the tractor overturned. Halsne was dead when Dr. L.B. Barry of Williams arrived at the scene of the accident.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rose Grove church near Williams, preceded by a brief service at 1:30 at the family home. The Rev. T. Hanson will officiate with burial in Rose Grove cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Foster funeral home until 9:30 a.m. Saturday at which time it will be taken to the family home.

Peter Jennings Halsne, son of Rasmus and Bertha Halsne, was born April 14, 1918 on a farm south of Blairsburg. He later moved with his parents to a farm near Williams where he was reared and educated.

He was united in marriage June 3, 1939 to Esther Leona McCartney at Webster City with the Rev. W. Dow Crewdson officiating at the ceremony. Following their marriage the Halsnes had farmed near Blairsburg. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Lois Jean and Diane Irene, both at home; by his mother, Mrs. Bertha Halsne of Webster City; three sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Eugene (Serena) Long of Blairsburg, Mrs. Clarence (Gladys) Larson of Williams, Mrs. Charles (Jeanette) Miller, Blairsburg, Milo Halsne, Blairsburg, Torges Halsne, Williams, Harold Halsne, Webster City and Reuben Halsne of Carlisle, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, who died March 3, 1951.

Mr. Halsne was baptized May 19, 1918 by the Rev. S.C. Simonson at Rose Grove church. On June 26, 1932 he was confirmed at the Rose Grove Lutheran church by the Rev. Hiram Jacobson.
