Harold E. Gates, 69, of Webster City died Thursday, March 22 at the Hamilton County Hospital following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home with Rev. Vernon Sorensen officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. There will be graveside flag folding by American Legion Post 191 of Webster City.

Friends may call at Foster Funeral Home after 4 p.m. today (Friday, March 23) until the time of service.

Harold Earl Gates, son of Earl and Noy Enid Blankenship Gates, was born Sept. 3, 1920 at Clarion. He was educated at Clarion.

In 1941, he married Doris McIntire. He served in the U.S. Army from May 26, 1942 until Jan. 31, 1946 in the European Theatre.

He returned to Webster City where he was employed at Marvel Livestock and Maudlin Construction, and later operated Gates Mobil Oil Station.

He was currently employed with the Iowa Greenthumb Program at the Hamilton County Department of Human Services.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Linda Gates of Uvalde, Texas; five sisters, Evelyn (Mrs. Jesse) Busick of Eagle Grove, Mildred (Mrs. Harold) Johnson of Rockwell, Lola (Mrs. Harold) Kalstorf of Britt, Ruby (Mrs. Wayne) Taylor of Garner and Lois (Mrs. Charles) Dayton of Goldfield; two brothers, Dale of Marshalltown and Raymond of Eagle Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife (on Dec. 10, 1976) and his parents.

He was a member of American Legion Post 191 of Webster City.
